Overview of 2D-Echo

A 2-D echo, or two-dimensional echocardiogram, is a type of ultrasound that uses sound waves to create images of the heart. It can help diagnose a variety of heart conditions, including heart disease, heart valve problems, and heart failure. At Atlas Medical Diagnostic Center, we offer 2-D echo services to our patients, providing accurate and reliable diagnostic results.

During a 2-D echo, a gel is applied to the chest, and a small handheld device called a transducer is passed over the chest. The transducer emits sound waves that bounce off the heart and create images of its structure and function. The images are displayed on a screen, and our experienced team of radiologists and cardiologists will interpret the images and provide a report on your heart health.

Some of the uses of 2-D echo include:

  • Diagnosing heart conditions: A 2D echo can help diagnose heart conditions such as heart disease, heart valve problems, and heart failure. It can also help detect any abnormalities in the heart’s structure or function.
  • Monitoring heart health: A 2D echo can be used to monitor the heart health of patients with existing heart conditions or those at risk of developing heart disease. Regular monitoring can help detect any changes in the heart’s structure or function and allow for early intervention.
  • Assessing treatment effectiveness: A 2D echo can be used to assess the effectiveness of treatment for heart conditions. It can help determine if the treatment is working and if any adjustments need to be made.

Procedure of 2D-Echo

Here’s what you can expect during a 2-D echo:

  1. Preparation: Before the procedure, you must remove any clothing from the waist up and put on a gown. You will also need to lie on a table on your back, with your left arm at your side and your head slightly elevated.

  2. Application of gel: A small amount of gel will be applied to your chest, which helps the sound waves travel better and produce clearer images.

  3. Placement of transducer: The sonographer will place a small handheld device called a transducer on your chest. The transducer emits sound waves that bounce off the heart and create images of its structure and function. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort as the sonographer presses the transducer against your chest to obtain the images.

  4. Image acquisition: The sonographer will move the transducer over various areas of your chest to obtain images of your heart from different angles. You may be asked to hold your breath or change your position during the procedure to get better images.

  5. Completion of the procedure: Once the sonographer has obtained all the necessary images, the gel will be wiped off your chest. You can then get dressed and return to your normal activities.

  6. Interpretation of results: Our experienced team of radiologists and cardiologists will interpret the images and provide a report on your heart health. Your doctor will review the report with you and discuss any further testing or treatment that may be necessary.

During an ultrasound examination, you will lie down on a table while a technician moves a wand (called a transducer) over your skin. The transducer sends sound waves through your body, which bounce back to create images of your internal organs or tissues. The examination is non-invasive and painless.

The time it takes to get blood test results can vary depending on the specific test and the laboratory processing the sample. Some test results may be available within a few hours, while others may take several days or longer. Your healthcare provider can give you a better idea of what to expect.
